This blog was inspired by a rack that came up in a game last week – AABENRT. More about that later, but first see if you can solve these anagrams which all have the letters AAB.

Mike Currie inspired this week’s blog by playing ratbane. It was a word that was successfully challenged off the board. He had the word ANTBEAR – the great anteater – but his word was close. It just needed to be spelled with an S – RATSBANE
Words that end in BANE refer to plants that are toxic to various animals. Mostly the animals are listed in the singular, there are just two that need to be pluralised. They are all spelled one specific way. None of them can be spelled both ways
BUGBANE
COWBANE
DOGBANE
FLEABANE
FLYBANE
HENBANE
RATSBANE
WOLFSBANE
There are a few words that end in those 4 letters, but are nothing to do with being toxic:
CUBANE is a type of hydrocarbon
MIRBANE and MYRBANE are something to do with perfumes
URBANE is refined or elegant
INURBANE is not urbane
All of them take an S except the last two. URBANE can be extended to URBANER and URBANEST but there are no extensions to INURBANE
The word BANE can also be used as a verb meaning to kill with a poison. So the words BANED and BANING are both good
Answers to A Grade Challenge
BRAAIED – (South African) Grilled meat over open coals
SABATON – A foot covering as part of a suit of armour
BANDARI – (Hindi) A monkey or a cheeky girl
ABATURE – A trail through a wood beaten down by a stag
RABONAS – Unconventional methods of kicking a soccer ball
When performing a RABONA you plant one leg to the side of the ball and bring the other leg around behind to kick the ball. Sounds too difficult for me!
