V for Victory

This blog is brought to you by the letter V

However before we get to that we have a carryover from last week's blog about cheeses. A word came up on my random word study that I had not realised was a cheese. Maybe you do. See if you can find the cheese in:

A     E     G     G     I     L     O     T

A Grade Challenge

R     E     T     I     N     A     V

No there isn’t a 7 letter word with those letters. You need to make an 8 letter word using something on the board. Unfortunately there is not a G available. It would have made 4 words with an available G. - AVERTING, GRIEVANT, TAVERING and VINTAGER. There are 5 other possible words using a letter on the board. Can you find all 5?

B & C Grade Study List

Getting VV on your rack can feel very awkward, but there are surprising number of short words that allow you to play both. This is the full list of 3 to 5 letter words with a few related 6 letter words thrown in:

VAV   A letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The plural is VAVS

VIVA   To examine orally. The plural is VIVAS

There is a good back hook for this word. T makes the word VIVAT which is an expression of enthusiastic approval. Note that because VIVA is a verb that means you can play VIVAED and VIVAING

VIVE   Lively in Scottish. Because it is an adjective you would think that is does not take a S. However, VIVES is allowed because it is a disease of horses. R can also be used to make VIVER, which is a fishpond. The Scots also allow the word lively to be spelled VIVELY

VIVO   Also means lively, in Italian. No extensions at all.

BEVVY   Alcoholic drink

BIVVY   To bivouac. Spend the night in the open without tents

CIVVY   Civilian

DIVVY   To divide up

LAVVY   Lavatory

LUVVY   Member of the entertainment industry. Also LUVVIE

NAVVY   To work as a labourer

SAVVY   To understand. Also SAVVEY

VALVE   To provide a device to control the flow of a liquid or gas.

Those last 3 are all verbs including SAVVEY. Some of those extensions like SAVVYING, SAVVEYED and VALVING could easily draw an extra 5 points from a challenge

VARVE   A seasonal layer of sediment deposited in still water. Although it is not a verb you can still have VARVED which describes water which has a varve deposit. An L can also be used to make VARVEL. That is a ring attached to the short leather strap on the legs of a hawk used in falconry

VERVE   the state of being lively. This also has several good hooks. As well as VERVES there is L for VERVEL an alternate spelling of VARVEL. N makes VERVEN which is an alternate spelling of the flower VERVAIN. T makes VERVET which is a small monkey

VIVDA   Meat hung and dried without salt. Also spelled VIFDA

VIVID   Strikingly bright or intense

VOLVA   A sac which incloses certain immature mushrooms. It can be pluralised as either VOLVAE or VOLVAS

VOLVE   To turn over and over or to ponder. Don’t miss the chance to put an E in front for EVOLVE

VULVA   Genital organ. Can be extended with 4 different letters to make VULVAE, VULVAL, VULVAR and VULVAS
