Mt Albert Scrabble Club Members at the National Champs 2025

At King’s birthday weekend the National Scrabble champs were held in Hamilton.

13 of our club members participated. 24 games were played over the 3 days – requiring stamina and concentration to last the distance.

In A grade our highest finisher was Chris, who finished 4th on 13 wins, in a very tough field.

In B grade Alexander finished in the prize money, in 3rd place with 14 wins – also in a tough field which included players who would normally have been in A grade. Alexander was also keeping an eye on the live streaming, and was there very early on the first morning to set that all up.

In D grade Bernie was the only club player – she won the prize for the most bonus words in the grade with 36.

In E grade Calum was in the lead for much of the competition – he finished 2nd with an amazing 18 wins – equal with the winner but a lower overall spread. Calum also had the most bonus words in E grade with 35. Tara was close behind in 3rd place with 16 wins.

In F grade Cooper was 1st with 18 wins – 3 wins ahead of 2nd place! Rodney finished 3rd with 14.5 wins and the most bonus words with 32.

Winning club team - Every Nationals there is a prize for the winning club team – this is the top 3 from a club, in any grade on number of wins. This is the first time Mt Albert has won this since 2008. Cooper 18 wins, Calum 18 wins and Tara 16 wins – a total of 52 wins between them – 8 wins more than 2nd club Wellington. Amazing effort!! Here they are back on home turf proudly showing off their medallions.

All our club members whether in the prize lineups or not, did us proud. Andrew and Lawson (A grade), Val (B grade) Ben and Mike H (E grade), and Maheu (F grade)
