Going For It

What words can you make by fitting 3 or 4 letters into one of these layouts?

_ _ _ G O E R

_ _ _ _ G O E R

There are just 2 words with the 7 letter combo, but there are 6 words of 8 letters

Sometimes it is something odd which motivates me to write a new blog. On this occasion it was watching a TV program about life in the 1960s and one of the people said that their father was a pubgoer.

I thought that didn’t sound right and a quick check showed that pubgoer was not correct, but that led me to do this blog about what words are allowed.

Before we get onto the answers to the quiz we will look at other possibilities. One of them is only a 6 letter word and is the only one that isn’t really a GOER.

POGOER Someone who uses a pogo stick (not someone who goes to the PO)

Since all of these words can be pluralised, POGOERS would be a nice bingo.

At the other end of the scale are words of longer than 8 letters. They are less useful, but they would be great fun to play. For example:

FESTIVALGOER

I have seen festival played several times as a bingo. I have never thought before of the possibility of extending it by making it festivalgoer. If your opponent played FESTIVAL down the side of the board it would be very enjoyable to make it FESTIVALGOER or even FESTIVALGOERS.

In the same vein you can have:

BEACHGOER

CHURCHGOER

CINEMAGOER

CONCERTGOER

GALLERYGOER

MOVIEGOER

OPERAGOER

PARTYGOER

PICTUREGOER

THEATERGOER

THEATREGOER

UNDERGOER

Finally there is just one word that indicates where you don’t go:

NONCHURCHGOER

An indication of how big a part religion plays in our language that this is the only non-goer allowed. For example, having been dragged unwillingly at an early age to certain events by parents who thought I should be exposed to culture, I would now describe myself as a nonoperagoer. I would also have claimed to be a nonballetgoer, but since you can’t be a balletgoer that seems redundant.

And finally we come to the answers to the quiz:

FORGOER

OUTGOER

FAIRGOER

FILMGOER

FOREGOER

PLAYGOER

RACEGOER

SHOWGOER

Note the two spellings of FORGOER/FOREGOER

I hope you enjoyed that list and we will see you soon at the scrabble club. What we need is a few more clubgoers….. damn, they don’t even exist.

Happy Scrabbling

Patrick
